Why Influencers Must Stop Promoting the Gambling Industry in the Philippines: An Ethical Controversy

Social media influencers have become a mighty force in shaping public opinion, establishing trends, and influencing the purchasing behavior of people lately. It affects the masses because content creators of millions of followers hang on to whatever videos, posts, or stories they create as references to what to buy and where to go for the next adventure at times even on how to think. Sad to say, this brings along an alarming trend-a trend something needs attention-something most concerning: that of betting. While many say that they are providing entertainment or merely giving choices for passive income, the truth is more complex and morally challenging.

Filipino Society and Effects of Gambling

First, one should identify the impact of its promotion on society to better understand why this is considered a problematic issue. As long as the Philippines can be said to have managed the issues of the state-sanctioned lottery in the provinces, down to casinos and online gaming facilities, for some, this is a pastime activity, while for others, it becomes a detrimental addiction that tears families apart, making people go bankrupt.

Serious in scope, addiction to gambling extends not to the individual but has a ripple effect through families and communities. Its ripples result in instability in one's bankbook, piling on debts, crime as well. A study "triggers compulsive behaviors that are hard to check," and allowing gambling to be developed in the poor country where most live below the poverty line actually worsens the hardships already present among vulnerable populations.

Why Influencers Are A Root Cause Of The Problem

As an influencer, they may enjoy a close and trustworthy relationship with their audience. In many cases, followers perceive them as relatable individuals who can offer valuable insights or inspiration for their everyday life. An influencer promoting a product or service may thus be perceived as endorsing that, for instance something is safe, fun, or beneficial. While these promotions may be entirely irrelevant when taking gambling as an example.

1. Normalization of Risky Behavior: Influencers make the culture of gambling seem a "normal, acceptable fun". Such an action is dangerous, because it may blunt sensitivities of people, mainly the young, towards adverse consequences of gambling. This can result in what will be depicted as "easy money" or some entertaining activity into harmful financial decision-making and even addiction.

2. Targeting Young and Vulnerable Audience: Most social media users are minors and impressionable; they will be more receptive to the idea of earning money with ease and less cautious of the potential risks when gaming. Influencers unwittingly influence a behavior with a platform or activity from which followers may suffer damages to their mental and fiscal well-being.

3. Financial Burden and Ethical Obligations: Most of the paid influencers for gambling get humongous rewards to publicize content regarding it and losses rarely go public. Here, one-way communication regarding winning and the story of success prevails. To a financially sound influencer, this promotion seems harmless, but it could be a disaster for some person who follows them when the financial status is quite unstable.

The Immorality of Promoting Gambling

Promoting gambling is bad business. It goes even further to become a moral irresponsibility. Here is why:

1. Playing on Economic Inequalities: Many Filipinos are still unable to stabilize their finances. Promoting gambling feeds off dreams of quick cash in an arena where desperation pushes them more to take high risks. A gambling influencer preys on these followers' financial shortcomings for personal gain.

2. It erodes social values in terms of family, community, and resilience. Filipinos live by family, community, and resilience, but gaming, more so the fast track to easy money advertised, has it against these fundamental values that thrive on shortcuts, risking taking over hard work and perseverance. It makes it undermine trust within the family circle due to deception and secrets brought about by playing and their financial dealings.

3. Setting a Bad Precedent: If popular social media influencers are promoting gambling, they are setting a dangerous precedent for other creators that the trend will be repeated. This could lead to much broader normalization and acceptance of gambling among people, who will consider it harmless part of life, when, in fact, it does result in very significant ethical and social repercussions.

The Way Forward: A Call for Responsible Influence

Influencers can set an example and make a difference in meaningful ways. Instead of promoting gambling, they can utilize their social media platforms to raise awareness among their followers about the dangers of such practices. They can advocate for financial literacy, responsible entertainment alternatives, and sustainable means of earning money.

Here are some alternatives that influencers can promote instead:
  1. Financial Literacy: Educating their followers on how to invest, save, and responsibly manage money.
  2. Productive Hobbies: Arts, writings or coding type of skills that foster entrepreneurship.
  3. Community Building: Activities and projects for community up lifting and strengthening social ties.
  4. It is also a big responsibility being an influencer. As much as their work may be legitimate business concerning partnership with companies and revenue generation, it should not undermine the principles of ethics. Gambling promotion undermines not only the credibility of influencers but also puts at risk the followers.
In a country like the Philippines, which values community and well-being, it is about time that influencers had some self-reflection. Never about profits if there is no regard for trust, integrity, or even positive influence. When change begins, people like these influencers will be good advocates of responsible behavior so that their sources remain inspirations rather than exploitations.
